Cole Lacy Scholarship

The Margaret S. Cole and Susan Cole Lacy Scholarship

The Cole-Lacy Scholarship Fund is a permanent endowment of the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, NJ, for the purpose of providing annual scholarships for graduating high school seniors or college students. Preference will be given to students who are members of First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, who are involved in church activities, who intend to major in education, music or ministry and who stand in the top 25% of their class. However, all fields of study will be considered. Applications are welcome from all area high schools, colleges and graduate schools.

Earle Cole and his wife Margaret were teachers in the local community and members of The First Presbyterian Church in Pitman.  Their daughter, Susan Cole Lacy, lived in Tennessee, and was also a teacher.  They had all seen first hand the power of an education and the impact it could have on the lives of children and young adults.  When Margaret died, Earl created the scholarship in her name. Sadly, his daughter Susan, died a few years later.  When Earl passed away, the church was informed that he had bequeathed his entire estate to the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, with the funds to be used to continue this scholarship program.

The Cole-Lacy Scholarship Committee consists of three members at large, one active Elder, one Elder at large, the Church School Superintendent and the Pastor, ex officio, all from the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman.

Applicants are required to complete an application form (available here), to provide a copy of their most recent transcript noting class rank and to provide a copy of their most recent Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Applicants are also required to prepare a one page essay explaining the choice of their field of study and how this choice is supported by their faith and their service to the community at large.

Completed applications are due in the church office at 10 Wildwood Avenue in Pitman by 12 noon on Monday, May 7, 2018. Under no circumstances will this application deadline be extended. Any application submitted after the deadline or is incomplete, will not be considered. Students may apply more than once for this scholarship, but two awards is the maximum that will be offered to any one student. Scholarships will be presented in Sunday worship on Father’s Day, June 17, 2018 at 10 AM. A copy of the evaluation criteria for the scholarship is attached for your reference.
